Cisco ISR router end of life: your options
Cisco 1900, 2900 and 3900 series routers still run thousands of branch offices across India. Here is how to handle their end of life without disrupting your sites.
The Cisco ISR G2 family (1900, 2900 and 3900 series) has reached end-of-life: Cisco no longer sells it or releases new software for it. Cisco has also started retiring the ISR 4000 range, and the Catalyst 8200 and 8300 edge platforms are now its current branch routers. See Cisco's end-of-life bulletins for exact dates by part number.
If your ISR G2 routers are stable and your WAN links are not changing, the practical choice is often to keep them running with tested spare units and the matching HWIC / EHWIC modules, and replace them site by site. When you do upgrade, check that your interfaces (serial, E1, SFP), licences and throughput needs are covered by the new model.
Umang Telecom supplies refurbished ISR G2 and ISR 4000 routers for like-for-like replacement, new Catalyst 8000 edge platforms for upgrades, and maintains both under AMC.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Is the Cisco 2900 series router end of life?
Yes. The Cisco 1900, 2900 and 3900 ISR G2 routers are end-of-life. Cisco no longer sells them or provides new software releases.
What replaces the Cisco 2911 router?
The usual replacement is an ISR 4331 or a Cisco Catalyst 8200 edge platform, depending on throughput, interfaces and licensing needs.
Can I still buy a Cisco 2911 or 1941?
Yes, as tested refurbished units, which is often the quickest way to replace a failed router without changing the site design.
Do HWIC cards work in ISR 4000 routers?
No. ISR 4000 and Catalyst 8000 routers use NIM modules, so interface cards need to be replaced as part of the upgrade.
