How to choose a PoE switch
A PoE switch powers your cameras, access points and phones over the network cable. Choosing one is mostly about two numbers: power per port and total power budget.
PoE (802.3af) delivers up to 15.4 W per port, enough for IP phones and most fixed cameras. PoE+ (802.3at) delivers up to 30 W, needed by most Wi-Fi 5/6 access points and PTZ cameras. UPOE and 802.3bt deliver 60 W or more for high-power devices.
Next, add up the power of all the devices you will connect and compare it with the switch's total PoE budget. For example, a Cisco WS-C2960X-48LPD-L has a 370 W budget while the WS-C2960X-48FPD-L has 740 W, even though both have 48 PoE+ ports. Leave about 20 percent headroom.
Finally, check uplinks (1G or 10G), whether you need a managed switch with VLANs for cameras and phones, and whether the switch must stack with what you already run.
